Upwork alternatives for hiring developers in 2026

Upwork alternatives for hiring developers in 2026: Upwork’s fees, then Contra, Fiverr Pro, Arc, Lemon.io, Toptal, Andela, BairesDev and a studio compared.

Key takeaways

  • Upwork clients pay 5% on Basic or 10% on Business Plus, plus up to $14.99 per new contract.
  • Upwork freelancers pay 0% to 15%, so both fees together take 5% to 19% of a Basic client’s spend.
  • On a small job, the hours you spend screening can cost more than Upwork’s fee.
  • Lemon.io needs 160 prepaid hours, and BairesDev’s Clutch profile lists a $50,000 minimum project.
  • Marketplaces suit one-off tasks, vetted networks a specialist, and firms or studios a team or a product.

The best Upwork alternatives for hiring developers depend on how much of the hiring you want someone else to do. Contra and Fiverr Pro are the closest marketplaces, Contra with lower fees and Fiverr Pro with vetting and a money-back guarantee. Arc, Lemon.io and Toptal screen developers before you meet them. For a team over several months, Andela and nearshore firms such as BairesDev supply engineers, and a product studio builds and runs the whole product.

Most people start looking for one of two reasons, cost or time. As of 9 October 2026, Upwork charges clients 5% of every payment on its free Basic plan or 10% on Business Plus, and Basic adds a one-time fee of up to $14.99 per contract. Freelancers pay a separate fee of 0% to 15%. Upwork leaves most of the screening to the client, and on a small job that time can cost more than the fee.

9io wrote this post, and as a product studio we’re one of the options in it, so we also say where the others are the better choice. What we say about other companies comes from their own pages, or from Clutch for BairesDev, read on 9 October 2026. Vetting rates and match times are what each company says about itself. The post covers Upwork’s fees, the cost of screening, a comparison table, each group of alternatives, and a decision rule for four kinds of work.

Upwork fees in 2026, for clients and freelancers

Upwork publishes its fees on separate pricing pages for clients and freelancers.12 As of 9 October 2026, they work like this.

  • Clients on Basic pay a 5% marketplace fee on every payment to a freelancer, including hourly and fixed-price contracts, Project Catalog projects and bonuses. Eligible US clients paying from a checking account pay 3%. There is no upfront cost to join.
  • Clients on Business Plus pay 10%, or 8% from an eligible US checking account. The plan adds Expert-Vetted talent, unlimited AI-curated shortlists and, for eligible US companies, 30-day payment terms.
  • The contract initiation fee is a one-time charge of $0.99 to $14.99 on each new Basic contract, which Upwork says varies with “contract type, account history, and hiring activity”.3 Rehiring someone on a new contract means paying it again. Business Plus waives it except on fixed-price contracts of $100 or less, where it is up to $4.99.
  • Freelancers pay a service fee of 0% to 15% per contract. Upwork shows the rate before the freelancer bids or accepts an offer, and it stays fixed for the life of the contract.4

The freelancer’s fee comes out of the rate the client sees, so freelancers price it in.2 Upwork’s help page gives the arithmetic: a freelancer who wants $20 an hour after a 10% fee bills $22.22.4 With the 5% marketplace fee on top, a Basic client pays $23.33 an hour, about 17% more than the developer keeps.

Freelancer bills Client pays on Basic (5%) Client pays on Business Plus (10%) Freelancer receives after a 0% to 15% fee
$500 $525 $550 $425 to $500
$5,000 $5,250 $5,500 $4,250 to $5,000
$40,000 $42,000 $44,000 $34,000 to $40,000

The table leaves out the contract initiation fee. Together, the two fees take between about 5% and 19% of what a Basic client pays. Upwork says the freelancer fee pays for payment protection, fraud prevention, dispute resolution and its business tools, and those protections matter most when a contract goes wrong.

One more fee matters if you find someone good and want to employ them or pay them directly. Upwork charges a conversion fee of 13.5% of the freelancer’s estimated earnings over a 12-month period. A discount based on the client fees you paid on their contracts in the previous 12 months reduces it, but never below $1,000.5 On $60,000 of expected work, that is $8,100 before the discount.

What screening on an open marketplace costs you

On an open marketplace the platform confirms who people are, and you judge whether they can do the work. Upwork counts 18 million-plus freelancers in 180 countries and says it verifies every freelancer’s identity and location.1 Profiles show reviews, work history and talent badges. Upwork’s AI hiring agent, Uma, invites candidates to apply and, Upwork says, returns a shortlist of applicants in under 6 hours. Reading proposals, interviewing and testing are still the client’s job.

That time is easy to leave out of a budget. The table prices one hire using assumptions we chose for illustration. They are not measurements, so replace them with your own.

Step Assumption Your time
Write the brief and acceptance criteria One hour 60 minutes
Read proposals 30 proposals at 3 minutes each 90 minutes
First calls 5 calls of 30 minutes 150 minutes
Paid test task 2 finalists, 4 hours each at $50 an hour, 45 minutes to review each 90 minutes, plus $400
Total 6.5 hours, plus $400

If an hour of your time is worth $100, one hire costs about $650 in time plus $400 in test tasks, or $1,050 before fees. On a $5,000 job, Upwork’s 5% fee is $250, so the screening costs about four times the fee. On a $40,000 engagement the fee is $2,000 and becomes the larger cost.

Vetted networks sell the middle rows of that table. They screen applicants before you see them and send a short list, and Toptal and Arc add a risk-free trial. You still interview, and a paid test task is still worth running. If screening is the main problem, check Business Plus before leaving Upwork. It includes Expert-Vetted talent, which Upwork describes as its top 1% of freelancers and agencies, screened for technical expertise and soft skills.

Upwork alternatives compared: fees, vetting and minimums

The table compares Upwork with eight alternatives, from freelance developer platforms to nearshore firms and a studio, as of 9 October 2026. The vetting column gives each company’s description of its own process, and “not published” means we couldn’t find the figure on its public pages. For 9io, the column describes how our proposals work.

Option Model Published fees or rates Vetting (the company’s own claim) Minimum commitment Who manages the work Best for

Upwork, Contra, Fiverr and Arc publish what a client pays per transaction or per hour. For the others, ask each for a written quote for the same role and hours, and compare the quotes line by line.

Sites like Upwork for developers: Contra and Fiverr Pro

Contra is the closest match if fees are the problem. As of 9 October 2026, it says hiring is commission-free. Its client help centre lists a flat platform fee per payment that rises with the payment’s size to a cap of $29, plus card processing at 2.9% + 30¢.6 Paid by card in one instalment, a $5,000 project costs up to about $174 in fees, against about $251 to $265 on Upwork Basic. Approved US bank transfers cap the processing fee at $5.

Contra’s own pages differ on the smaller tiers. The client help article, last updated on 12 May 2026, lists $2 to $29, with lower amounts when the freelancer pays for Contra Pro. The pricing page shows $15 or $29, and no client fee when the freelancer is on Pro.7 The amount at checkout is the one to trust. Contra organises its marketplace around tools such as Webflow, Framer and FlutterFlow, and says every freelancer is verified with completed projects, earnings history and skill badges.8 It suits front-end, website and design-led app work, and as on Upwork, judging the engineering is up to you.

Fiverr Pro is Fiverr’s vetted tier. Fiverr says industry experts evaluate every Pro freelancer before acceptance, and it offers refunds on eligible orders if you’re not satisfied with the deliverables.910 You can buy a fixed-price package or hire by the hour. As of 9 October 2026, the Essential plan is free, and Advanced costs $129 a month for compliance features, custom invoice reports and deferred payments for eligible accounts.11 Fiverr’s standard service fee is 5.5% of each purchase, plus $3.50 on orders under $200.12

Fiverr Pro also sells the screening and the management. A domain expert will send you two vetted candidates with their availability and price ranges, for $199 according to the help article and “a discounted $89” according to the FAQ on the same page. Its end-to-end project management needs a budget of at least $3,000, and the fee is a share of the budget that falls as the budget rises. Fiverr’s own example is 18% of a $10,000 project, or $1,800.10 Fiverr Pro works best where the deliverable is easy to define, such as a landing page, an integration or a prototype.

We also looked at Gun.io. As of 9 October 2026 it is active, but it now sells vetted engineers with delivery oversight, and we found no prices on its site.13 That puts it closer to the managed options further down than to Upwork.

Vetted networks: Arc, Lemon.io and Toptal

Arc is the most open about price. As of 9 October 2026, its pricing page lists freelance hires at $15 to $110+ an hour, and its FAQ says most Arc developers charge $60 to $100+.1415 Upwork’s own cost guide puts software developers on Upwork at $10 to $100 an hour, so Arc’s typical rates sit at the upper end of that range.16 You can pay by the hour, invoiced weekly, or book a weekly retainer for a set number of hours, and contract roles come with a risk-free trial of up to two weeks. Arc calls its talent the top 2%,17 and its FAQ lists five vetting steps, including a coding assessment, a hands-on project and a technical interview with a senior engineer. It also places permanent employees for 20% of the annual salary.

Lemon.io places contractors from Europe, Latin America, the US and Canada. It says about 1% of applicants reach the platform, after a CV review, an AI screening call, a technical task, a recruiter interview and a live technical interview with a senior engineer.18 The minimum, as of 9 October 2026, is 160 hours, which is a month full-time or two months at 20 hours a week, prepaid typically a month ahead.19 Lemon.io doesn’t publish client rates. Its rate index puts the median senior developer in its network at $45 an hour in Q3 2026, and says those are developers’ own rates on active contracts, which don’t show what clients pay.20

As of 9 October 2026, Toptal charges a flat $79 a month once you decide to go ahead with matching, and doesn’t publish talent rates.21 It says about 3% of applicants pass its screening, which uses coding challenges, live problem-solving, interviews with senior domain experts and a test project. Every engagement starts with a trial of up to two weeks, and if you’re not completely satisfied you aren’t billed for it. Toptal also says it introduces candidates within 24 hours in almost all cases and that 90% of clients hire the first one.21 Its developer page puts a typical hire at about 48 hours.22

Upwork vs Toptal on cost

Upwork vs Toptal is a choice between costs you can see and screening you can hand over. Upwork publishes its fees and shows each freelancer’s rate, and the hours of screening fall to you. With Toptal, the screening is built into a talent rate you only learn from a quote, on top of the $79 subscription. On a one-off task, Upwork’s published rates show the full cost before you start. When you want a specialist for months and can’t easily judge one yourself, ask Toptal for a weekly price and compare it with an Upwork rate plus 5% and a day of your screening time. Our Toptal alternatives post compares Toptal with the other vetted networks in more detail. If the specialist you need is a technical lead who owns the architecture, our post on what a fractional CTO costs in 2026 has the market rates.

Managed and nearshore teams: Andela and BairesDev

As of 9 October 2026, Andela describes itself as the human layer behind production AI. It says it is building the largest source of AI engineers, “trained and assessed on the latest AI tools”, for Fortune 500 companies, and that it has 17K+ AI-native engineers ready to deploy.23 You can add its engineers to your team or have Andela run a fully managed team, and it also trains companies’ own engineers in AI work. Prices, minimums and start times aren’t public, and the first step is a discovery call. Its pages are written for larger companies, so it suits a funded team that needs several AI engineers more than a first small project.

BairesDev’s site showed a human-verification check when we tried to read it on 9 October 2026, so these details come from its profile on Clutch, a B2B review site. In the description it gives there, BairesDev says it receives more than 2 million applications a year and hires fewer than 1%. It also says it has 4,000+ senior engineers across the Americas who work in clients’ time zones.24 Its engineers can join your team through staff augmentation, or it can deliver a whole project. The profile lists a minimum project size of $50,000 and an hourly rate of $50 to $99. Clutch notes that its pricing information for BairesDev is based on reviews that included a project size.

For a buyer coming from Upwork on a small budget, that minimum usually decides it. BairesDev makes sense once you know you need several engineers for months, and it can staff far more people than a small studio such as ours.

A product studio such as 9io, and when it’s the wrong pick

A studio fits when you want one team to build a product and keep it running, and you’d rather review milestones than manage developers. 9io is a product engineering studio, a small team of senior engineers with a fractional CTO, a designer, a product manager and QA. We build products, keep them running and bill only for the hours we work.

Coming from Upwork, the terms to compare are how you pay and what you own. Each of our proposals names the people who’d do the work, their hours and each person’s rate, with no management fee. We invoice twice a month for work already done, and 10% of each invoice waits until you accept the milestone. Code, history and infrastructure definitions live in your repository from the first commit, and you own them as you pay. You can scale up, scale down or stop at a month boundary with 30 days’ notice, and defective delivered work is fixed under a 90-day warranty.

A studio is the wrong pick for a one-off task, where a marketplace is quicker to set up. It’s also the wrong pick if you have a technical lead and need one more developer to direct, which is what Arc, Lemon.io and Toptal are built for. If you need dozens of engineers, BairesDev and Andela have the scale.

How we gathered these figures

  • We read each company’s pricing, FAQ and help pages on 9 October 2026. For BairesDev we used its Clutch profile, because its own site asked for human verification.
  • Where a company’s own pages disagree, as Contra’s do on platform fee tiers and Fiverr’s on the sourcing price, we give both figures.
  • Vetting rates, match times and team sizes are the companies’ own claims. We haven’t hired through these platforms for this post, and we haven’t measured their time to hire, rates or quality.
  • The screening cost is an illustration built on the assumptions in its table.
  • Fees change often, so check the linked pages before you commit.

Which option fits: a decision rule for four kinds of work

Pick the row that matches the work, then compare prices within it. Minimums are as of 9 October 2026.

What you need Start with Minimum spend What you still do
A one-off task with a clear result Upwork Basic, Contra, or a Fiverr or Fiverr Pro package None Screen, test and accept the work
A part-time specialist Arc on hourly billing, Toptal, or Upwork Business Plus with Expert-Vetted talent None stated at Arc for hourly billing; $79 a month at Toptal Interview and direct them
A developer or small team for months Lemon.io or an Arc retainer; BairesDev or Andela for larger teams 160 hours at Lemon.io; $50,000 on BairesDev’s Clutch profile Direct the work, unless you buy a managed team
A product you need built and run A product studio such as 9io, or a nearshore firm’s full-project delivery Set by the proposal; ask for named people and hours Set priorities and accept milestones

Most of the choice comes down to whether someone on your side can judge the engineering. If you can read the code or test the result, an open marketplace keeps fees low and the screening is a cost you control. If you can direct a developer but can’t easily judge one, pay a network to screen. If nobody on your side can do either, pay for delivery and hold the provider to milestones. For an app made with an AI app builder that now needs a developer, our checklist for taking a vibe-coded app to production lists what to ask them to check.

Before you move a job off Upwork:

  1. Price the whole job, meaning rate times hours, plus any client fee, subscription or management fee, plus your screening time.
  2. Check the minimum before the first call.
  3. Ask how the trial works and whether you pay for trial hours if you stop.
  4. Keep the code in a repository you own from the first commit.
  5. If the developer you want came from Upwork, budget for the conversion fee.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to Upwork for hiring developers?

It depends on the work. Contra and Fiverr Pro are the closest marketplaces for a one-off task, and Arc, Lemon.io and Toptal screen candidates when you need a part-time specialist. For a team over several months, look at Andela or a nearshore firm such as BairesDev, and for a product built and run, a product studio.

How much are Upwork fees in 2026?

As of 9 October 2026, clients pay 5% of each payment on the Basic plan or 10% on Business Plus, or 3% and 8% if they are eligible US clients paying from a checking account. Basic also adds a contract initiation fee of $0.99 to $14.99. Freelancers pay 0% to 15% per contract.

Upwork vs Toptal: which is cheaper for hiring a developer?

Upwork publishes its fees and shows rates on profiles, but you do the screening. Toptal charges $79 a month once you proceed with matching and gives talent rates only in a quote. Compare Toptal’s weekly price with an Upwork rate plus the 5% fee and the hours you’d spend screening.

Are there sites like Upwork for developers with lower fees?

Contra is the closest. It says hiring is commission-free, and its client help centre lists a flat platform fee per payment, capped at $29, plus card processing of 2.9% + 30¢. You still find, screen and manage freelancers yourself, as on Upwork.

Can I hire an Upwork freelancer directly, off the platform?

Yes, by converting the contract. As of 9 October 2026, Upwork’s conversion fee is 13.5% of the freelancer’s estimated earnings over 12 months, less a discount based on the client fees you’ve already paid, with a $1,000 minimum.

Which freelance developer platforms vet their developers?

Toptal says about 3% of applicants pass its screening, Arc calls its talent the top 2%, and Lemon.io says about 1% make it. Fiverr Pro says industry experts evaluate every Pro freelancer, and Upwork’s Business Plus includes Expert-Vetted talent that it calls its top 1%. These are the companies’ own claims.
